The Peninsula Bluegrass Borg is excited to celebrate their second year here at Caffe Sportivo. The Thursday jam offers an eclectic mix of bluegrass, old-time, and whatever else strikes their fancy. Everyone is welcome to com and pick, or if you don’t play, please come on out to listen.

All acoustic instruments welcome, no amplification please! UPDATED TIME: Every Thursday from 6-8 p.m.

We are also excited to kick-off the Bluegrass on Broadway Festival on March 11, 2010. Bluegrass on Broadway brings bluegrass music to downtown Redwood City. In addition to live performances, it also includes a bluegrass film festival, author symposium, and the Northern California Bluegrass Awards. Admission is free to all Bluegrass on Broadway events! Frozen River

Does a scene of a rushing waterfall, a peaceful calm lake at sunrise, or a lone abandoned farm house capture your interest? If so, we encourage you to stop by the Caffé to check out our new artist’s work. His name is Mark Fowler and he his photographs emphasize the essence of the landscape. Come in and see his work durning the month of February. You can also meet him in person and learn more about his work on Saturday, February 13th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. during his artist’s reception.

More about Mark:

Having grown up in a family which spent vacations backpacking in wilderness areas and traveling overseas, Mark Fowler early developed an avid interest in nature and photography. His grandfather was a landscape architect for the U.S. National Park Service and a photographer. He also watched his father utilize medium format cameras to achieve needle sharp nature photographs and when digital photography came of age, Mark entered the field to expand on what he had learned.

With extensive travel in the United States, Europe and most recently in Iceland, Mark has captured photographs emphasizing the essence of the landscape. Mark does not edit the nature of the photographs but uses advanced techniques to capture the full range of light in the scene, from the deepest shadows to the brightest highlights. These techniques result in conveying the feeling at the moment of capture. Providing the viewer with a unique perspective.

Mark’s photographs have been exhibited and sold in corporate venues, charity auctions and galleries. Prints are for sale at Caffé Sportivo through the end of the month.

“Places” –– Photographs by Belinda Carr at Caffé Sportivo – There will not be a show for this installation.

Travel and fine arts photographer Belinda Carr brings her photographic work to a gallery showing at Caffé Sportivo with her exhibit “Places,” through January. In this selected exhibition, Carr focuses the keen vision of her travel experience into a commentary including nine of the places she has felt drawn to photograph, establishing an enduring reference between the artist, the locale and the viewer.

Carr’s visual journey goes from San Francisco to Paris, Rome, Positano, Cabo San Lucas and Cozumel, back in the states to New Orleans, and then home to Redwood City. Her artistic statement in “Places” details a broader goal and vision, which translates the colors, stories and cultural allusions of her chosen sites into vivid tableaus thoroughly engaging the viewer.

The initial embarkation point on the photographer’s compass is her backyard of San Francisco, where she captures the color and audacity of a well-known North Beach alley, this one between Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s City Lights Books and the infamous drinking establishment, Vesuvio’s Saloon. In Vesuvio, She arrests the artistic personality that is The City, along with its confidence and irreverence. Next, the photographer’s vision of Paris is caught on a rainy night in front of the Arc de Triomphe climaxing the nocturnal vista leading from the Champs-Elysees. Confronting this work, the viewer can feel the danger and precariousness of the moment as the photographer fixes this immense structure on camera, while the oncoming lights of Paris traffic threaten.

In her visual chronicling of Rome, Carr has here chosen a night scene along the Tiber River, to highlight her passion for defining place, identity, and social commentary. In Winged Victories, the sovereign majesty of St. Peters in the background and the bronze statues watch over the homeless finding refuge under the Vittorio Emanuel II Bridge.

Carr’s photograph of Positano, one of the most ardently beautiful and magical of locales along the Amalfi coast, manifests two of the artists most striking talents, her eye for color, and her careful, subtle digital manipulation. She shares a quote from John Steinbeck, another lover of Positano, that makes you want to catch the next flight, “Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” Nearer home, Carr captures the playing out of yet another life-style during a sojourn in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. In Cabo Harbor, she mixes the ingredients of an exotic night, safe waters, and night reflections to create a blend of magic and repose, as the dying of the day relinquishes to evening’s promise. With Cozumel, the photographer discovers a hidden beauty, the striking colors and local history found in a mural on a hidden backstreet in Cozumel, Mexico.

Back in the states, New Orleans has provided the artist with some of her most memorable photographic fantasies. In NOLA Courtyard, Carr captures the close environment of the Cajun capital’s old-world architecture, where one can almost hear a cornet from the Quarter, and smell the chicory coffee and beignets from Café DuMonde. NOLA Courtyard is one of the artist’s most dramatic works in an electronic palette using digital brushes.

As the photographer says, “No collection of Places is complete without including the place called home.” The photographer has chosen two icons of Redwood City to remind us about our own sense of place. The Fox on Broadway takes the viewer on a night-time promenade in front of the Art Deco-style Fox Theatre, while Redwood City Courthouse, rebuilt in the year of the great earthquake and only just recently brought back to original splendor, reminds us of the beauty and strength of the “Place” that we have in our backyard, and that indeed, [our] “climate is best by government test.” [Notes by Stephen Ruppenthal]

A little bit about Becky…

She grew up in Central Illinois in swirls of flour and sugar, baking muffins and reading her parents’ cookbooks.

After graduating from Cornell University with a degree in Nutritional Science, she moved to San Francisco and took a desk job. But there was something missing; she wasn’t baking.

About a year later, she left the desk and became a pastry chef to pursue her passion. On most days, you can find Becky tinkering in the Be. Baking kitchen perfecting recipes and developing fun flavor combinations that are deliciously addictive.

The Be. Baking line of goodies is dedicated to using the finest ingredients possible, and takes a playful approach to baking – perhaps by introducing savory spices into sweet cookies or making savory versions of sweet old favorites. An emphasis on local, seasonal and organic ingredients is obvious in every scrumptious mouthful.
